It's the same generalized code in m_binbuf that is used for $@ in message boxes.
If you just want an external to fetch abstraction arguments there are at least a 
dozen existing externals you can use as a model. (As well as 
[args(---[canvasinfo] which is a Pd-l2ork internal class.)
