Did you try updating git? I thought that got solved. If not, you can always
manually update the control file located at (IIRC)
packages/linux/debian/control.desktop

I think you may be lacking some dependencies as that is significantly
smaller package size than what it should be. Try building with

tar_me_up.sh -B > build_log

and then grep for errors inside the log file. There is also a way to
redirect stderr output, I forget off top my head what is the exact syntax.
It's something like >&2 instead of >. I suggest you google for it. This
will give you a more accurate picture of where the error might be
occurring. Hope this helps!

Albert, any chance you could set up a launchpad to build debs specifically
for Debian?
