Course Objectives
The Linux Laptop Orchestra is an experimental ensemble whose purpose is to explore its creative and research potential. Due to its experimental character, the course should be seen as an journey of discovery for students and Faculty alike rather than a preset and/or predetermined lecture. Some of the topics covered by the course include composition for a laptop orchestra, development of the supporting software infrastructure using Pure-Data, exploration of hyperinstruments, performance aesthetics and allied research topics, as well as rehearsal and performance of newfound art developed by students and Faculty.

The course is split into two parts, the lecture (3-credit-hour MUS4124) and the ensemble (1-credit-hour MUS3314). The prerequisite for the lecture component is the Computer Music & Multimedia Design (MUS3065-6) two-semester course whose enrollment is open to all VT students, while the ensemble has no required prerequisites.

Evaluation and Grading
Students engaged in the ensemble will be given a Pass/Fail grade solely upon their attendance and in-class participation. Lecture students will be required to complete series of assignments (60% of the final grade), including the final creative project (40% of the final grade) designed to be performed by the laptop ensemble.

Course Materials
•  The Theory and Technique of Electronic Music (free online book by the Pd author Miller Puckette)
•  Bang Book (free online collection of Pd articles)
•  L2Ork website

IMPORTANT! Please note that some of the software used in this class may be available as a demo that will expire after a preset amount of time. Once such software "expires," it will become either partially functional or inaccessible. Either way, it will be student's responsibility to keep track of this particular issue and as such, this limitation will not be viewed as a valid excuse for belated submission of assignments.

Any student who feels that he or she may need an accommodation because of a disability (learning disability, attention deficit disorder, psychological, physical, etc.) please make an appointment to see me.
